Introduction

Hey, I’m Kristian. The project Barely Functional started as a way to wrestle with melodies that refused to leave my head. I’ve loved music all my life, but I never went to music school – instead, I learned by doing, failing, and doing again. Working in a high-stress corporate job, music became more than a hobby; it became therapy. Listening was never enough, it never really scratched the itch so I started writing.

My tastes are all over the place – from the electronic sparkle of The Pet Shop Boys, to Britpop and alternative rock like Lightning Seeds, funky grooves, droning pads, even the occasional classic twist. If it moves me, I’ll try it.

When I’m not tinkering with sound, I’m usually behind a camera, filming or photographing, or chasing steam on heritage railways – someday I’ll be a fireman or driver on a steam loco and am currently on the progression path to get there.

Why ‘Barely Functional’?

I considered just using my own name, but I wanted something that gave the project a life of its own. Barely Functional is honest, a little satirical, and yes – maybe a little chaotic. Life, neurodiversity, and general existence demand a lot of energy just to show up… yet here I am, making music anyway. The name felt right: contradictory, messy, but genuine – like the tracks you’ll hear here.

What is the point of the project?

Simply to have a good time and build a portfolio to share it. No pressure. No pretense. Just music. I want this to be a space where I can share, experiment, improve, and maybe collaborate with other musicians, producers, or visual artists. Think of it as a journal, but with more synths and fewer words
